Counseling FAQs

  • Most likely, yes. Mental Health Counseling has certain limitations for providing services, based on your location of residence. We will look at the legality of working together, seeing if we’re a good fit, and if I am available to offer you counseling services.

For most states, and countries, there are limits to the services that can be provided, and I cannot ethically (or legally) offer my counseling services to residents outside of Texas.

I do, however, offer coaching and consulting services nationally and internationally.

Please read the FAQ below about Counseling vs Coaching vs Consulting.

  • Chris brings more than textbook training—he brings lived experience. As a veteran, a man who’s overcome deep personal loss, and someone who’s rebuilt his life from the ground up, he understands struggle firsthand. His work blends practical tools, mindfulness, and grounded presence—not just theories.

  • Not at all. Therapy is just as much about growth as it is about healing. Whether you’re feeling stuck, curious, overwhelmed, or just want to feel more like yourself again, therapy can help clarify your path and strengthen your ability to navigate it.

  • Sometimes, yes—and that’s okay. Growth often involves discomfort. But it also brings relief, insight, and progress. Chris creates a safe, confidential, judgment-free space where you're never pushed beyond your readiness, but always supported toward what’s possible.

  • Everyone’s timeline is different. Some clients notice change in the first few sessions. For others, it unfolds more gradually. What matters most is consistency and collaboration. Chris walks beside you at your pace—with care, clarity, and grit.

  • My sessions are 100 minutes long with 20 minutes left for wrapping up.

Standard Counseling sessions are 60 minutes long, practiced for 50 minutes with 10 minutes left for notes and wrapping up.

At present, I do not offer sessions shorter than 100 minutes.

I have found over the years that in twice the time we make exponentially more progress. I firmly believe that anything worth doing is worth doing for two hours. I’ve had numerous clients state that they get 10 years worth of therapy in 1 session because of how longer sessions shape the work of good counseling. Disclaimer: Just because you get 10 years worth of therapy in one session does not mean that you will be healed in one session. My goal has always been, and continues to be, to get you out of counseling and on the path to wellness as soon as possible. I strive to serve as many people as possible, and not have any person in therapy longer than they need to be. I can not and will not make any promises about the speed of any one person’s recovery. Personally, I find that by laser-focusing on a problem for two hours, we get much more work done than we would in 2 one-hour sessions.

  • Counseling focuses on processing trauma and healing emotional injuries through licensed health care. Counseling involves diagnosis, treatment, or remediation of mental or emotional disorders, which is regulated. Counseling is a state-sanctioned health care profession that requires the completion of credentialed education programs, and ensures the credibility and professionalism of counseling practitioners who focus on their clients’ health and well-being. Typically, counseling can only be offered by counselors who are licensed within the state in which the services are provided.

Coaching focuses on goal setting, personal development, motivation, and performance — not on mental health treatment. Coaching is largely focused on external changes achieving goals. Let’s get you to where you want to be!

Coaches should not be involved in the remediation of emotional injuries, and instead focus on future progress and planning. As an unregulated industry, coaching can be offered across state and national lines to anybody.

Consultation, much like coaching, is intended to focus on future development, usually for teams and businesses, but can also apply to one-on-one mentorship. Consulting usually applies a template to a given problem. Consulting says to the client “You are at Point A, wanting to get to Point B. I have walked that path before, and here is how you get there.” Consulting is also highly applicable to teams and team building within businesses. It often focuses on solving unaddressed personnel problems.
